That’s great, you have decided to tackle the task of decluttering and organizing!

Before you start sorting the “stuff “this would be a good time to take a moment to consider what items carry sentimental value for family and friends.

Decisions about personal property can be very emotional and sensitive. Many times, it is not the monetary value that makes an item important to family members, but the sentimental value.  It is important to have open and honest discussions and be sensitive to everyone’s feelings.

There is a story about a family whose great grandmother spent a lot of time baking pies with her daughters when they were growing up.  Grandma has a yellow pie plate that is her favorite.  It is on the table at all of the family gatherings.  Who gets Grandma’s yellow pie plate?  All of the daughters and even the granddaughters would like that old yellow pie plate.  It’s not just a part of the past, but a part of living history.

What are the ”yellow pie plates” in your life?  They may not be yellow and they may not be round, but look around your home for those special personal items.
